Steel, stone, wood, & strap
The sculpture is made up of a few main components steel and rock which relate to the largest ancient and modern structures. The other supporting elements are the logs and straps that have been used to move the large building materials. The ladder physically protrudes like a crane hoisting the steel off the ground. Concurrently acting as a metaphor for growth and the urge to build bigger. It also proves the physical limits of the materials in our environment as the ladder cannot be infinite due to gravity.
My personal compulsion to climb is contrasted by most others’ fear of heights, there is some irony in the necessity to build taller. This piece is satirical, relating to the belief that aliens once comingled with humans and built the pyramids. The stone should roll on the logs from the weight of the beam, but it remains stagnant. Similar to the thought that ancient humans could not move such large rocks and did not understand simple mechanisms. I think it is a fun mental exercise to consider the craziest possibilities of our history on earth.
